Day #152 - The Old Phoenixville Tunnel

There was the 4 of us that set off to find the old, now abandoned, Phoenixville Tunnel. We met at 2 Sunday afternoon, we as in Marji Kay, Jesse, Nathan and me. We headed up the South side, found the entrance to the tunnel, but it was a straight drop down the side of rock. The rocks here is what I'm talking about, HA look at the face there sticking it's tongue out as if to say you suckers you'll never make it down here. We walked back down the hill to try and walk along what was the old line. OMG, swampy, muddy and we were sinking. Hmmm, let's try from the North Side.
Cell Phone pic here, but this is the beginning of the North Side

I'd been to Renninger's early and good ole Jay had drawn a map for me to the North Side. Great map too.
Here's Nathan, Marji Kay and Jesse traipsing through lots of overgrown green, prickers and
poison ivy. Nathan has a machete, which we did end up using too.
We FOUND IT!!! Marji Kay was the 1st to spy it. It WAS the old tunnel alright and not something
anyone would stumble upon unless they were deliberately looking.

You can see some of the old railroad ties poking out of the water here

We managed to slide down to the top of the tunnel, but the only way down was on loose bits of
shale, so this was as close as we got.

Cell Phone Pic - Here were atop the tunnel over hang. Nathan's feet & my foot!

Ok now we're down here, how do we get back up, LOL! :)

Not sure what M.W.S stands for, but we found this in a little wall that we passed as we hiked back up to our cars

These too!
We may not have been able to get into the tunnel, BUT we FOUND it!
We will go back in the fall when there are no leaves and less vegetation. We'll be better prepared
too with our waders on cause are determined to get down there come hell or high water! :)
